Sija Spaak – Family Law Barrister
Wairarapa & Wellington New Zealand
I have been in practice since 2000 and have specialised in family law throughout my career. I am a senior lawyer appointed by Family Courts to represent children in court proceedings.
In my career I was a partner at Wellington Family Law from 2003 until 2019 and have worked as a Barrister since then. As I am now based in the Wairarapa I am no longer with Wellington Family Law Chambers.
Before training as a lawyer I had a background in community work and social work and am a qualified social worker. I completed the LEADR mediation course in 2010 and use these skills in my work in the family court and in mediations.
I have two adult children, and 4 grandchildren now all teenagers. I have been a foster parent, and also gained a lot of experience working with children through my voluntary work with international exchange students.
My strengths are in assisting people to achieve an agreed resolution, as opposed to continuing litigation. It is better for parties, and the children, as they are often adversely impacted by the ongoing dispute(s), if the dispute is brought to an end more promptly, this also has the added benefit of reducing parties’ legal costs.
